A 120-Meter Mast Was Erected

The whole spring was spent on preparing all kinds of documents as well as applying for the allocation of a plot, drawing a blueprint, performing geological studies, and on other similar procedures. Quite often the situation seemed hopeless, yet was always resolved as if by itself. Thus the team of the Tartu Family Radio was lifted up again and again. Just one week before the arrival of the American builders, however, there emerged a hurdle that seemed insurmountable. We had to build an access road to the plot, which was reasonably boggy, along with an island undergirding the mast and the foundations of the transmitter house on the island. All hopes of finding a contractor were dashed one by one and we came close to the cessation of the entire enterprise. However, Mare got it into her heart to turn to Tiit Veeber, then a total stranger of a businessman. He was immediately ready to set to the work, without any reference to conditions or a reward. The next day witnessed the roar of bulldozers on the building plot. By the arrival of the American volunteers the access road, the island, and the foundations were all completed, making it possible for them to proceed with the erection of the mast. Tiit Veeber became the first Estonian at home to support the Tartu Family Radio on a large scale, since all the gravel for the road and the island as well as a variety of works were Tiit's sacrifice to this grandiose enterprise.

The building of the mast awoke the spirit of yet another domestic Estonian entrepreneur, Valdek Tagel. He allowed to use the warehouse of the firm BRON LTD for storing our building materials as well as his trucks and tractors during the whole building process. The listeners also lent their helping hand. Forty thousand kroons worth of donations were made within that single month to cover the accommodation costs of the US builders.
