April 1997 took Paavo Pihlak, the executive director of the Tartu Family Radio, to the USA on a one-month study trip. During the trip he had an opportunity to familiarize himself with the work of Christian radio stations on the other side of the Atlantic and understand the basics of running a non-profit broadcasting corporation. He found the knowledge gained there relevant to promoting the work of the Tartu Family Radio. For the rest of the Tartu Family Radio staff this month of study was like a touchstone, since it was the first time they had to manage without an engineer and solve the problems bound to occur on their own.
